On the 1st of June 2019 “Transylvania” Airport had the privilege to host the Sovereign Pontiff during his apostolic visit in Romania. His Holiness landed at Târgu Mureș on an aircraft from the company TAROM.

Due to the unfavourable weather conditions, Pope Francis come from Bucharest on a plane and headed towards Miercurea Ciuc by car, to the Liturgy at the Marian Shrine in Șumuleu Mic. After the mass, the Pope and the official delegation from the Vatican came back to ”Transylvania” Airport with a helicopter and later at 3:30 p.m. left towards Iași on an aircraft.

The airport’s staff were delighted by the visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and expertise in handling the aircrafts. At its present site, the airport has been serving the region for over 50 years, proving its importance as a means of establishing and maintaining diplomatic relations.
